Step 1 — LCD or lens assembly replacement
*Remove the battery and SDCard.
*Remove 2 silver screws from left hand side and 2 black screws from bottom case rear section.



Step 2
*Remove a black screw from under that battery compartment cover.
*Remove two silver screws from under the A/V connector cover.
*Remove the silver right hand end.
*Remove the case back.
* (On reassembly, just before replacing the rear cover is a great time to clean the fingermarks off the LCD and the inside of the rear cover window.)



Step 3.
*Lift off the control dial.
*Remove 2 screws securing the wrist strap anchor on the right hand side, and remove the anchor.



Step 4
*Remove the 2 screws in the bottom case front section.
*Remove a screw from the top, adjacent to the mode wheel.
*Remove the front cover. This requires a fair amount of wiggling in order to release it at the top. Easy does it.



Step 5
Remove one remaining screw from the tripod mount and remove the mount. (This scew is adjacent to the speaker - note the position for reassembly).


Step 6
*Remove a screw from the top right hand end of the LCD frame, and a shorter one from the bottom right hand end, and remove the LCD clamp.
* (Note that on reassembly, the LCD clamp has two small tabs which have to be located in the LCD frame.)




Step 7
*Disconnect a ribbon from the buttons board.
*Remove a long screw from the top of the buttons board, and a shorter one from the bottom.
*Remove the buttons board.



Step 8
*The previous step revealed the main logic board beneath the buttons board.
*Disconnect 2 ribbon cables from the main logic board, which connect to the LCD. The socket of the wider one has a clamping bar (black) which you have to gently lift.
*Lift off the LCD. Note that this is secured on the left hand side by double-sided tape. Gently lifting the LCD right hand side, the double sided tape will slowly unstick. Don’t rush it - it'll come in its own good time.


Step 9
*Remove 5 screws retaining the LCD frame. Note that one is recessed at the top right hand corner. This is a very slightly different size - keep it separate from the other 4.
*Remove the LCD frame, and another piece of metal on the bottom right hand side of the frame, which covers a pair of snap-on connectors and prevents them working loose. Note that on reassembly, it’s easy to forget this additional piece of metal.
*Note the large cylindrical flash capacitor which could still hold a dangerous high voltage charge if the camera has been switched on recently. Do not remove protective insulation on this and surrounding components unless you know how to discharge the capacitor safely.




Step 10
*Gently lift off 2 snap-on connectors at the top of the main logic board, and two on the left hand side next to the lens assembly.
*Disconnect a ribbon from a connector behind the on/off button.



Step 11
* Remove a screw from the top panel to the right and the rear of the shutter release, and another in front of the mode wheel.
*Lift off the top panel.
*Separate the main logic board and battery compartment as one unit from the lens and flash assemblies as another, disengaging the red-eye LED from its slot in the front of the lens assembly.


Step 12
*On the bottom left hand side of the lens assembly there is a connector with a red and a black wire going to the speaker. Disconnect this, taking care not to strain the wires or the ribbon that the socket is mounted on.
*At the rear top left hand side of the lens assembly is a ribbon cable connecting it to the flash module. Disconnect this.
(Note the transparent protective insulation covering the flash board just below this connector. Do not *remove this as the board may still have a dangerous high voltage on it from the flash capacitor behind.)
Remove a screw from the top right hand side of the flash module, and separate the flash module from the lens assembly.
(On reassembly, hold the flash head closed while refitting it to the lens assembly.)




Step 13
*Lens disassembly and reassembly is not for the faint-hearted. However, you can test the operation of the lens mechanism as follows. (Do this after reassembly if you strip it down.)
* Gently lift the ribbon cable connections off the two tags on the back of the motor.
* Apply power to the motor from a 3v battery pack by connecting it to the two tags on the motor. Apply positive to the terminal to the front of the lens to extend it, or to the back of the lens to retract. (Keep all ribbons out of the way - applying power inadvertently to the wrong place could damage something.)


Step 14
* If you dare to disassemble the lens, you're largely on your own! Here are some hints to get you started.
* Disconnect a ribbon on the top of the lens and release the ribbon carrying the socket from its retaining pins.
* Disconnect 2 ribbons, one on top of the other, on the bottom right hand side of the lens. Lift the ribbon carrying the sockets from its retaining pins and ease the ribbon out of its guides, removing a piece of sticky tape.
*Gently pull the ribbon connections off the motor.




Step 15
*A ribbon cable still links the back plate of the lens assembly to the outer shell. Whilst you can leave this in place, you will then have to take care not to place too much strain on it. You can release it as follows.
*Locate the zoom stow sensor on the top of the lens, and the two zoom motor shaft sensors on the front of the zoom motor.
*Each of these sensors is secured with a spot of black mastic which you need to very gently scrape away with a flat screwdriver. Once you have released it you can withdraw the sensor from its housing by lifting a corner of the ribbon on which it's mounted, taking great care not to damage it.
*On reassembly, ensure that each sensor is pushed firmly home and secured with a spot of adhesive. Cyanoacrylate (superglue) is not recommended as the vapour could fog the lenses and it may be difficult to remove on a subsequent disassembly.
*You can use nail varnish or hot melt glue from a glue gun. A glue gun is likely to dispense far too much, so you can either cut away the excess when cold with a craft knife, or transfer a tiny quantity from the glue gun nozzle on a matchstick.



Step 16
*Remove 4 screws from the edges of the lens rear plate. Release a clip near the motor in order to lift off the rear plate.
*Lift the rear plate just a little in order to inspect the gear chain. Note the order of the gears if you are going to remove them.
*If disassembling further, note the orientation of the concentric parts.
*A posting on the CHDK forum (http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?top...) includes detailed information covering the operation and disassembly of a different Canon lens, but may nevertheless give you valuable insights to help you along.



Step 17
*The plastic gears, guides, guide grooves and sliding surfaces may be lubricated if necessary with a smear of silicone grease, but take care not to get any on the contacts of any of the ribbons.
*The lens must be reassembled starting with the silver barrels and working outwards, and ending with the outermost shell.
*The lens must be reassembled in the extended but not zoomed state.
*If the image stabilisation cell is removed, its 2 ribbons must be fed through a slot in the outer shell once the lens is fully reassembled except for the back plate. This is only possible with the lens extended.
*When you get stuck (you will get stuck!), put it to one side, sleep on it, maybe dream about it, and come back a day or two later.
*Once reassembled, test the lens with a 3v battery pack as previously described, and leave it in the fully retracted state before refitting to the camera
