• Never read in bed by candles or night lamps.
• Do not set lamp too close to the curtain.
• Don’t leave the stove while cooking.
• Never let the electric stove get red hot.
• Always turn off the stove after cooking.
• Make sure that the valves of the stove and LPG cylinder are closed when you are not using heat.
• When leak is detected in your gas stove, have it replaced immediately.
• Make sure that all electrical wiring in the house are properly installed and regularly inspected by competent electricians.
• During brown out or black out, unplug all electrical connection to be safe, pull down the main switch or circuit breaker.
• Unplug electrical appliances from the convenience outlet after usage.
• Avoid octopus connections.
• Give your appliances, especially stoves, oven toasters and microwave ovens plenty of air space to prevent overheating.
• A pot holder near a hot burner is a fire hazard.

SAFETY HOUSEKEEPING IS ESSENTIAL TO FIRE PREVENTION

• Clean up your area on a regular basis.
• Put flammable materials away once you are done with them.
• Clean floors of spills and debris.
• Make sure trash is safety contained.
• Keep passages and exits clear of obstructions.
• Keep tools and equipment free from dirt and grease.
• Don’t let flammable materials come into contact with electrical equipment.
• Make sure firefighting equipment is easily accessible.

DO’S AND DON’TS

In case of emergency, these are certain guidelines to be followed

• Never ignore a fire alarm. It is always better safe than sorry.
• Stay calm and make quick exit from the building.
• If you are in a high rise building, exit in an orderly manner. Panic results stampede and may cause more fatalities
• Take the stairs during fire. You could get trapped in an elevator.
• Stay close to the ground while escaping. Always remember that smoke rises so you will find cleaner air near the ground.
• Always test the door for heat before opening. Touch the door knob with the back of your hand. If it is hot, do not open the door. Look for alternative route for an escape.
• Never forget to close the door behind once you have exited a room. This help delay the spread of fire.
• If your clothing catches fire, roll on the ground to put it out.
• STOP. Do not run. Running fans the flame.
• DROP to the ground.
• ROLL OVER and OVER to put out the flame. Cover your face with your hands for protection.
• SMOTHER THE FLAME. Cover the victim with any heavy woolen cloth.
• Once outside of the burning building, call the fire department immediately in case no one has done so already.
