The father of one-atom physics and the inventor of today’s
omnipresent touch screen technology, G. Samuel Hurst, ’47, let
curiosity lead him. In the process, he created a technological
revolution that has changed the way we interact with our world.
In 1971, Dr. Samuel C. Hurst - the founder of Elo TouchSystems - invented the world’s first electronic touchscreen interface. Today, over 30 years later, Elo is still leading the way: not only are we considered the standard for touch technology, we are also renowned for our wide range of integrated touchscreen systems as well as our dedicated customer service.

Following this, another important aspect to the touch screen is a resistive touch screen, which was developed by American inventor, Dr. Samuel Hurst and was produced in 1982. Hurst actually found this resistive touch screen in 1971. It wasn’t until 11 years later that Hurst’s sensor called the Elograph was mass-produced.
Hurst’s invention was just the start. Also in 1982, multi-touch technology began. The University of Toronto developed a tablet that could read multiple points of contact. In 1983, Myron Krueger developed an optical system that tracked hand movements so that users could interact using gestures. Following this, Bell Labs had developed a touch screen in 1984 that could change images with more than one hand. One year later, the University of Toronto teamed up with computer scientist and pioneer of human-computer interaction, Bill Buxton and created a multi-touch tablet using capacitive technology.
The HP-150 was one of the first touch screen computers invented in 1983. It consisted of a series of vertical and horizontal infrared light beams that crossed just in front of the touch screen. When a user would touch the screen, it would break the infrared and place the cursor in the desired location. The original product sold for almost $3,000.
In 1986, Atari developed the 520ST which was the first commercially-available POS system. This system is still by restaurants today. Gene Mosher created the 16-bit color computer software under ViewTouch copyright.
Things started to sky rocket from there, especially with Apple technology. In 1987, Apple created the ADP, also known as the Apple desktop bus, that was an early version of a USB cable. This invention allowed multiple devices, such as a mouse or a keyboard, to be plugged in at the same time. The idea behind this technology would be later used in smart phones and tablets.
In 1992, the first phone with touch screen capability came out. The IBM Simon was referred to as the fist “smart phoneâ€, although now the meaning has changed. Competitors tried competing and creating similar items as well, however they turned out to be more like tablets than phones.
The year of 2007 was really the year that changed touch screen ability as it was once known. Apple released its first phone that was completely touch screen. It was the most innovated touch screen device that had ever been seen. It was the only one that had the virtual key board as well. This invention lead Apple to create other touch screen devices such as the iPod touch and the iPad.
Apple has really set the bar high for competitors. Although now there are multiple different brands and types of smart phones with completely touch screen capability, none of them quite compare to the iPhone. It is the most popular phone of this generation, and Apple will continue to develop more touch products and keep improving their technology.
