Why should I repartition the internal storage of MyPhone Rio?
In the first place, why should you repartition the internal storage of one of the best selling mid-range Android smartphone in the market today? Is it necessary? The quickest answer I can give you is – “it depends on how you use your phone.â€. If you are one of those who use their smartphone for SMS texting, audio calls, and have only a few apps on the phone, then you have nothing to worry about. However, most Android users won’t be contented with having just those simple and small apps. That’s why they picked a competitive Android smartphone like MyPhone Agua Rio because they are hungry for more. That is why we need to find ways to address some little flaws with Agua Rio, like the memory storage problem.
If you are a MyPhone Agua Rio user and most especially if your unit is one of the first iterations released early this year then I am pretty sure that memory storage is one of your biggest problem. Most especially for those who have Rio V1 and have not yet updated their software to S5500_Agua_Rio_20140418_V1.15 through OTA system update. And by the way, if you happen to still have the Agua Rio V1 stock system software then you there’s a high chance that you won’t be able to save your apps even on your installed expandable microSD card. That’s one of the biggest flaws of the first version of Rio – memory swapping issue. But thanks to the efforts of the developers from XDA, they have found a workaround before the OTA update came. Still, you will need to root your MyPhone Agua Rio.
That memory swapping issue is no longer a problem with the latest MyPhone Agua Rio V2. Yes, that is right! You can now get and buy an external microSD card (I recommend a Class 10 microSD card for faster response) and swap the default storage for your Rio with no issues.
Probably, you will ask me now – “If the memory swapping is no longer an issue then why do I still need to repartition the internal storage of my Rio?“. Honestly, it’s your choice if you don’t want to do that. However, I can give you my own reasons why you should still need to repartition the internal storage.
MyPhone Agua Rio’s first and second iterations (v1/v2)4GB ROM is sliced into 3 parts.
Around ~1.43GB have been allocated to system
Around ~0.98 – 1GB is used for internal memory
Around ~1.55 – 1.6GB can be used as your Phone memory
As you can see, that ~1.55 – 1.6GB won’t be enough for you to download large Android app from Google Play. This is especially if you are going to download a large HD games. And more often than not, that ~0.98 – 1GB internal memory will just go to waste. So why not maximize the use of all available memory storage you have when you could?
So how can you increase your internal storage to a maximum of 2.5GB? That’s what we are going to show you now – to repartition the internal storage.
WARNING!!!
The following steps will involve rooting your MyPhone Agua Rio because you will need a superuser access to manipulate the stock partitioning of your internal and phone memory. This means that you might void your device’ warranty after rooting your device. So you have to firmly decide if you want to proceed.
Also, the following steps have been tested (many times) so if something happens to your Rio then we will not be held liable for the damage you incurred.
At some point, your phone’s stock ROM can still be recovered but that procedure is not covered by this article.
Steps to repartition the internal storage of MyPhone Agua Rio
Follow the steps below as-is and you will not be lost with the procedure. And make sure that your device is at least ~75% charged to avoid corruption.
IT IS A MUST as much as possible that you have a microSD card installed before you proceed. The backup will be automatically saved and stored on your microSD memory card.
1. Download and install Framaroot from XDA Forum. For the procedure on how to install and gain superuser access using Framaroot, just go to my previous article about how to root Agua Rio. We suggest that you download Framaroot version 1.9.2 since that has been tested to work with MyPhone Agua Rio.
2. Then once you have rooted your Rio (quickest way to find out if your phone is rooted, you should see the SuperSU app from your app drawer), you need to install BusyBox by Stephen (Stericson) from Google Play. This tool is essential for any rooted device.
3. Once you have installed BusyBox, wait until it finishes downloading all the necessary files.
4. Then you need to install RIO Recovery Installer. This tool is a MUST so that you can backup your ROM using TWRP or CWMR, and also you can use this for RIO stock recovery. Be a habit to ALWAYS make a backup of your ROM before doing anything.
5. Once you have downloaded and installed RIO Recovery installer, tap on Install CWMR from the option menu. You will be notified to reboot your phone to recovery console. Press OK.
6. Your device will reboot into recovery menu of CWMR (Clockworld Manager Recovery). Then use your volume rocker’s up and down to navigate and power button to choose the option you need. Navigate down and select “backup and restore“.
7. Select “backup“. This will trigger and initiate the backup process and it will be saved unto your microSD card.
Just be patient with the backup process, it will take a few minutes for it to complete with the backup process. The process depends on how many apps you already have on your device so the more apps you have the longer it will take. When I did this, the backup process took me roughly ~10min. Generating md5 sum is the last and the longest in the backup process. You will know that the process has been completed when you see the string “Backup complete!â€.
8. After the backup process is complete, go back to the main menu and select “reboot system now“. The device will reboot as normal.
You now have a backup of your device. You can always this backup anytime you wanted to.
9. This is the fun part now! We will now start to repartition the internal storage. And to begin with, you need to download another tool for Rio called m|p Rio Repartition. It is in the same page where you downloaded the Recovery Tool. Download that MPRioRepartition.apk and install on your device. UPDATE: We’ve experienced some issues such as CWMR is not installed using the tool from XDA so I’ve updated the link for you to download.
10. Once you installed the m|p Rio Repartition app, open it. You need to grant superuser for it to work.
11. Select and tap the button “2.5gb internal / 21mb phone (sagad)“. This will now start to repartition the internal storage.
12. The app will ask you to reboot to recovery – just press OK and proceed. If not, tap on the Boot to Recovery… button and then continue.
13. Your phone will reboot again to CWM Recovery console. Again, use your volume rocker to navigate to the option you want and the power button to select it.
14. Go down to “wipe data/factory reset†then press the power button to select it.
15. Then select “Yes – Wipe all user data“. Then wait for it to complete.
16. Then go down and select “wipe cache partition“, and select “Yes – Wipe Cache“… then wait again.
17. After that, navigate down and select “advanced“.
18. Select “wipe dalvik cache†and select “Yes – Wipe Dalvik Cache“.
19. We’re almost done and now we will restore your phone by getting your last backup. So go back to the main menu and select “backup and restore“.
20. Select “restore“.
21. Then on your screen you will see numbers there. Actually they are your backups named as dates when you backed up them. Select your last backup (or even your first backup will do…). Select “Yes – Restore“.
22. Now, this will take time because it depends on how big the last data you need to restore on your phone – be patient. Wait until you see it’s completed. You will see a line saying “Restore complete!â€
23. Go back to the main menu and select to reboot now.
VIOLA! You have now repartition the internal storage of your MyPhone Rio!
You might not notice it but sometimes on your first reboot after you repartition the internal storage your phone will tell you that your phone storage needs to be reformatted because it was damaged. This is OK, just tap on reformat.
You can now check again your storage settings to see the changes.
The video below is the steps we’ve done above. In case you are lost and finds it confusing, just watch the video below to see the steps in action. Thanks to my friend from Petiksmode.
